0–3 Months: Tiny Beginnings

Physical Development:

  • Reflexive movements. May briefly lift their head during tummy time.
  • Arms and legs move in jerky motions. Hands are often tightly fisted.

Senses:

  • Responds to loud noises.
  • Focuses briefly on faces and objects held close.
  • Prefers high-contrast patterns.

Feeding:

  • Strong sucking reflex. Feeds frequently.

Social and Emotional Development:

  • Cries to communicate needs (hunger, discomfort, etc.).
  • May make small throaty sounds.
  • Enjoys being held and cuddled.
  • Begins to recognize familiar voices and faces.
  • May briefly gaze at your face.

Cognitive Development:

  • Begins to learn through senses.
  • Shows interest in looking at faces.

Things you can do to support development:

  • Provide plenty of skin-to-skin contact.
  • Talk and sing to your baby.
  • Offer interesting things for them to look at.
  • Respond promptly to their cries.
  • Give them tummy time when they are awake and supervised.
