10–12 Months: On the Move and Communicating

Physical Development:

  • May be walking independently or taking a few steps while holding onto furniture (“cruising”).
  • Can sit down from a standing position.
  • Shows more coordination.

Senses:

  • Continues to refine all senses.

Feeding:

  • Eating a wider variety of foods.
  • May be using a spoon with some help.

Social and Emotional Development:

  • May say one or two words besides “mama” and “dada.”
  • Understands simple commands.
  • Waves goodbye.
  • May show separation anxiety.
  • Enjoys imitating others.

Cognitive Development:

  • Explores objects in many different ways (shaking, banging, throwing).
  • Can put objects in and take them out of containers.

Things you can do to support development:

  • Encourage walking by providing opportunities for cruising and supported steps.
  • Continue to talk clearly and use simple words.
  • Read books with simple pictures.
  • Play games that involve following simple directions.
  • Celebrate their achievements!
