3 Years: Imagination and Independence
Physical Development:
- Walks up and down stairs with one foot on each step.
- Jumps with both feet and begins to hop.
- Pedals a tricycle.
- Builds towers of more than 6 blocks.
- Holds crayons or markers with fingers (not a fist).
Senses:
- Uses senses to explore the environment actively.
- Pays closer attention to colors, shapes, and sounds.
Feeding:
- Eats independently with minimal mess.
- Can help with simple tasks like pouring water or washing hands.
Social and Emotional Development:
- Begins to play with (not just alongside) other children.
- Shows concern for a crying friend.
- Can express a wide range of emotions.
- May have fears or difficulty with transitions.
Communication:
- Speaks in 3- to 4-word sentences.
- Asks lots of questions (“what,” “where,” “why”).
- Follows 2–3 step directions.
- Can name most familiar things and people.
Cognitive Development:
- Sorts objects by shape and color.
- Engages in pretend and imaginative play (e.g., pretending to cook or go to work).
- Can complete simple puzzles.
- Understands the concept of “two” and may begin counting small groups of objects.
Things you can do to support development:
- Read daily and ask questions about the story.
- Encourage open-ended play with toys like blocks, dolls, or dress-up clothes.
- Offer chances to help with everyday tasks (cooking, cleaning).
- Talk about feelings and name emotions.
- Continue offering choices to build independence.
