4–6 Months: Discovering the World

Physical Development:

  • May roll over from tummy to back, and later from back to tummy.
  • Supports weight on arms during tummy time.
  • Reaches for objects. Grasps objects, often bringing them to their mouth.

Senses:

  • Follows moving objects with their eyes.
  • Pays closer attention to sounds.

Feeding:

  • May start to show interest in solid foods (with pediatrician’s guidance).

Social and Emotional Development:

  • Babbles and makes vowel-like sounds.
  • Responds to their name.
  • Smiles spontaneously.
  • Enjoys playing with others.
  • Shows excitement.

Cognitive Development:

  • Explores objects with their mouth and hands.
  • Begins to understand cause and effect (e.g., shaking a rattle makes noise).

Things you can do to support development:

  • Continue talking, singing, and reading to your baby.
  • Offer a variety of safe toys with different textures and sounds.
  • Play peek-a-boo.
  • Help them practice rolling over.
  • Introduce solid foods as recommended by your pediatrician.
