4 Years: Creativity, Confidence, and Conversation

Physical Development:

  • Hops on one foot and catches a bounced ball.
  • Climbs well and runs with ease.
  • Draws basic shapes (circles, squares) and may begin to copy some letters.
  • Uses scissors and utensils with better control.

Senses:

  • Uses all senses in play and exploration.
  • Pays attention to details in pictures, patterns, and surroundings.

Feeding:

  • Eats independently and helps with meal tasks like setting the table.
  • May express strong food preferences or dislikes.

Social and Emotional Development:

  • Plays cooperatively with other children and enjoys group play.
  • Shows empathy and understands rules.
  • Expresses a wide range of emotions and manages transitions more easily.
  • May have vivid imagination and occasional fears.

Communication:

  • Speaks in clear, complete sentences of 4–6 words or more.
  • Asks many questions and tells stories.
  • Understands time words like “yesterday” and “tomorrow.”
  • Knows basic personal information (name, age, sometimes address).

Cognitive Development:

  • Can count to 10 or more and recognize a few numbers or letters.
  • Understands the idea of “same” and “different.”
  • Engages in more complex pretend play.
  • Can follow multi-step directions.

Things you can do to support development:

  • Ask open-ended questions during conversations or play.
  • Encourage drawing, storytelling, and pretend play.
  • Read books together and talk about characters and events.
  • Practice simple counting and matching games.
  • Continue to offer praise for cooperation, effort, and creativity.
