7–9 Months: Getting Mobile

Physical Development:

  • Sits without support.
  • May start to crawl, scoot, or creep.
  • Pulls themselves up to a standing position.
  • Uses hands more skillfully.

Senses:

  • Has more refined vision.

Feeding:

  • Eating more solid foods with different textures.
  • May start to hold their own bottle or cup.

Social and Emotional Development:

  • Babbles strings of consonants and vowels (e.g., “mama,” “dada”).
  • Understands “no.”
  • May show stranger anxiety.
  • Enjoys interactive games like pat-a-cake.

Cognitive Development:

  • Understands object permanence (knowing an object still exists even when it’s out of sight).
  • Enjoys dropping and picking up objects.

Things you can do to support development:

  • Create a safe environment for crawling and exploring.
  • Continue to name objects and talk about what you are doing.
  • Play games that involve hiding and finding objects.
  • Offer finger foods.
  • Respond to their babbling.
